How Long Were You Dating Before You Got Engaged?
Mar 5, 2013
As we all know, today there is no right or wrong when it comes to wedding traditions. Whether it’s rocking a non-traditional bridal gown or tying the knot in the strangest of places, anything goes! This also includes the amount of time a couple has been dating before one of them pops the question.
There was (and still is) no rule when it comes to marriage proposals. Nowadays, you could be dating for any amount of time before you get married, whether it’s less than a year or up to ten! And of course, there are still so many couples who choose to not make it official, but practically are anyway.
As I’ve mentioned many times, our office manager Kristi is getting married after dating her fiance Steve for five years. Coincidentally, so is her identical twin sister, but Kate was only dating John for just a little over a year! Yet their weddings are less than a year apart. This sparked a bit of curiosity in me, and I was excited to ask readers and Facebook fans how long they were dating their significant other before they got engaged!
The time range was huge: Brandy W. from IL only dated her man for 9 months before they decided to get married. “I knew he was the one on the first date,” she gushed. Some people may think that’s a short period of time, but Lori B. had her beat by a landslide – she was only dating her now-husband for six weeks! Yet she’s a perfect example that the amount of time means nothing, because that was thirteen years ago and she’s still happily married. Others, like Tanya L. from MN, dated her beau for ten years before she finally tied the knot!
I think my favorite responses on this particular “question of the day contest” were the ones that made me laugh:
“One year, one month, one week, and one day.” – Nanci R.
“I’m still waiting!” – Kim J., MI
“It took six years and two kids later!” – Ana D., WI
“Three years dating…took him long enough!” – Jen B.
Although everyone who participated boasted a different amount of dating time, there’s one thing everyone had in common: that it didn’t matter how long it took for a proposal to happen, because it was definitely worth the wait!
A big congratulations to Sara Eisenhart who won this Facebook contest and a wedding cake topper! Sara’s fiance proposed to her just two days before their two year anniversary.
